remarques: | Time Magazine issue of 13.7.1942 extracts of the magazine, mostly world battlefronts: 1/ battle of Russia - Hitler is winning with the objectives a) the river Don b) Moscow-Rostov railway c) Moscow itself a big victory for Germany would be if the Red Army would have to retreat behind the Ural mountains and a Russia cut-off from its Northern and Middle East lines to its allies would be no longer a great threat for Germany - fall of Sevastopol but the Germans had to pay a high prize for its capture 2/ battle of Egypt - now since 4 days, the advance of Rommel has been stopped, Auchinleck (the AUK) has halted Rommel at El Alamein 3/ Rommel Africanus - the only man on earth whom Rommel looks up is Hitler and Rommel looks down contemptuously on all other men in the entire continent of Africa, however Rommel is considered as a) a bold and brilliant commander b) the best armored-force general of 2ndWW c) one of the greatest military commanders of modern times - biography of Rommel - war in an extemporaneous (= without previous thought or preparation) 4/ battle of the Atlantic - German submarines had been modernized as it could be examined from a captured U-Boot 5/ battle of the Pacific - it was confirmed that Japanese women were fighting as pilots and in the infantry 6/ battle of China - general Chennault's air group inflicted many losses to the Japanese forces, as explained by commander Chiang Kai-shek 7/ battle of Alaska along the Aloutians against Japanese ships 8/ Axis movement in Egypt (a fifth column?) 9/ Free France the US nor the UK will not yet recognize officially general de Gaulle's Free French Government 10/ muddles and mismanagement - the speech of Winston Churchill answering also the critics following the fall of Tobrouk - Churchill with his babylike head! - however he received an ovation and it is believed that he was still the kind of man to meet the awful necessities of war 11/ a preview of Europe remodeled after the war among 9 big nations left (see map), a partition of Switzerland into France, Germany and Italy was proposed! 12/ the Swiss alphorn 13/ US artillery trying to find new methods to fight tanks inspired by the self-propelled German 88 mm gun and this would be the role of tank destroyers = anti tank mobile guns - the tanks have 2 weaknesses: a) blind spots b) slow speed - the weakness of the tank destroyer is a lack of armour but they can avoid this weakness by high speed, great maneuverability or by long-range shelling from behind a hill with reconnaissance planes directing the fire 14/ the production of ships in US shipyards - the record: 50 ships were built June 1942 by one single company 15/ the war-damage insurance >> quite an interesting magazine, espc. concerning Rommel (on the cover) and the campaign of Egypt, an issue quite rare and expensive |
