remarques: | ninth volume edited by NBM/Flying Buttress (NBM being America's first publisher of graphic novels since 1976, located at New York with imprints such as Flying Buttress Classics Library, Amerotica, Eurotica and ComicsLit) under the supervision of Bill Blackbeard out of a sery of 18 volumes, all being accurate reproduction of the Sunday Pages in their full colour and in full size, each volume has about 52 pages, n.b. the sources of these Sunday pages are mainly from the Los Angeles Times and from the Milwaukee Journal edited by UFS (United Features Syndicate) volume 9 1939-1940 with dust jacket from 17.9.1939 (445) to 8.9.1940 (496) = 52 pages drawn by Burne Hogarth, based on the novel of Edgar Rice Burroughs, one of the longest continuities in this strip together with the Van Boeren settlers, the evil Vanger concludes and is followed by a stunning high point in Hogarth's art as Tarzan encounters a magnificent country (in episode peoples of sea and fire), the volume includes following episodes (number of pages): - Tarzan and the Boers end of part two: 33 - Peoples of Sea and Fire part one: 19 no introduction in this volume 1/ continuation of Tarzan and the Boers, end of part two searching for Matea, Carlus is captured by the ferocious Bulegas >> p. 445 a clumsy Carlus indeed but he is rescued by Tarzan whereas Vanger arranges a fake rescue of Matea from the Bulegas and so get the favour of Matea first unfriendly encounter of Tarzan with Vanger who is now well introduced in Matea's family, later on Tarzan visits the land of the baboons and makes friendship with Bo-Dek, the baboon's chief by saving his son Bo-Dan from a wild leopard >> p. 451 Bo-Dek killing also a leopard to help Tarzan >> p. 453 a nice shot panel Vanger has by now discovered diamonds in the van Boeren's land, but in the territories of the baboons and to get the diamonds, Vanger is beginning to kill the baboons with his rifle, Tarzan's stopped him and ordered him to leave the country at once, but Matea takes the defense of Vanger >> p. 455 Mynheer Tarzan has some problems with Matea Vanger's plan is now to marry Matea, murder Matea's family, kill all baboons and get control of the diamond territories, but for that he must first eliminate Tarzan; again on the trail of the baboons, Vanger and his stooges kill Bo-Dek, luckily Tarzan manages to rescue his son Bo-Dan which will by now seek revenge for his father's death and will not forget Vanger's scent; next Vanger puts his plan into action with a fire trap on Matea's family and wrongly accusing Carlus of this attempt but clever Tarzan thwarts Vanger's monstrous plan and unmasks Vanger's treachery, Matea is desolate and asks Carlus to forgive her >> p. 464 Matea's beauty however Vanger succeeds in running away and in making new plans with some desperados of a nearby rush-town, they kidnap Matea arranging a trap for Tarzan and Carlus gone to the rescue of Matea thanks to Bo-Dan the baboon which warns Tarzan of a disguised Vanger, the trap failed but Vanger's escapes again taking Matea with him, he will be soon catched up and shall die during a loyal but fierce duel with Carlus, the true and faithful lover of Matea >> p. 469 the Star of Africa hotel in the rush-town >> p. 471 above right corner: revolvers missing? >> p. 476/477 the duel between the evil Vanger and a Carlus only one-handed >> quite a good episode with good colour and with very fine artistic drawing which will however even be surpassed by the next episode n.b. in that story not less that 4 leopards are killed by Tarzan 2/ Tarzan and the peoples of the sea and of fire, part one on his way back, Tarzan meets a group of peoples, a race he had never seen before consisting of warriors guarding prince Jagurt and princess Leecia who are a strange couple; Tarzan is captured by the coward Jagurt but not before making him feel Tarzan's justice! Tarzan is led to a barge where he can again demonstrate his great courage during a tempest fighting against the demon-fish; then they arrive at the city of the sea and Tarzan is brought to the old king and the high-priest Molocar who condemned Tarzan to death by the demon-fish in the sacred lagoon Leecia tries to save the life of Tarzan by leaping into the lagoon, she is rescued by Tarzan but Tarzan himself is dragged down by a submarine assailant to a secret temple, Tarzan becomes the slave of Molocar and is told the story of the peoples of the sea and of the fire, Tarzan makes acquaintance of little prince Tanny, son of the king of the peoples of the fire, taken prisoner by Molocar, Tarzan succeeds in escaping taking with him little prince Tanny >> p. 478 unflattering description of prince Jagurt >> p. 480 Tarzan the mighty fighter >> p. 484 the high-priest Molocar, another well-drawn face of a villain >> p. 487 sea-fight against demon-fish >> p. 488 sea-warriors in underpants! >> p. 491 Tarzan will suffer the lash from no man >> p. 494 escape through the water tunnel with prince Tanny >> this is the beginning of probably the most exciting and beautifully drawn story by Hogarth with a fantastic painting art and colour together with a masterpiece of story-telling as well as a superb volume cover |
